Portraits of a friend from this past week

    • Matt Hill 11:25 am on May 28, 2013 Permalink | Reply

This is the first time I’ve seen one of your portraits and asked for more. I’m not sure what’s missing, but they don’t grab me like your others have… Perhaps the lack of context? Not sure.

I realized that I think I skipped a week or two! I’ve been a little crazy with working and not really shooting for myself (I don’t really want to post client stuff here). I’ve been experimenting with lights a lot, which has opened up a whole new world! I’m excited to have my own pocket wizards (been renting them) and play around with them even more, so I can post some things here. I’m also headed to Hong Kong in less than a month to photograph a series so I’m quite busy virtual scouting and researching. I’ve also started a new series but I don’t want to post anything yet until I have a more solid body. So basically I’ve been busy making and creating but just not much to upload! :) Hope to see you all at Matt’s show tomorrow!

You are really rocking the single light source. Can’t wait to see you get dangerous with two or more lights 😉

Ha! I wish! That was window light + reflector :) I’m still trying to get my flash to look like a soft natural light! :) I do love those PWs though :)

    This week’s fashion jumps

These are cheeky and fun. Only distracting thing is when the line of the wall meeting the ground behind them intersects the feet. Maybe get down a little more to get the feet above it?

I agree with Matt. I do however, of the two, I’m liking the second one more because of the confident expression and pose she gives.

    Fashion portraits

I shot some fashion portraits this weekend. Here is the first one I got to editing. I’ll post the rest when I finish them for next week. I also included some street fashion that I shot this week.

I love love love that levitating shot. Keeping the hands in the pockets really gives the impression he’s just out strolling, fantastic.

Agreed – the first hot is well done! Hands in packets was a great idea. And his expression – not overly animated. He must be from Brooklyn.

Can’t agree more with Jeff and Matt…The levitating shot is really cool!! Glad to see you’re exploring more of that.

Sharon…This is just an awesome image. Just love the tonality of this image and the great focused intensity it has. Would very much love to see this in a print :)

Boy, I love the lines of this. That table is just perfect and the round tableware with the color really makes it pop. You do these simple elegant moments such justice.

I shot my friend two weeks ago and finally got around to processing some of my favorites. I experimented a little with different processing techniques and also downloaded VSCO Film 02, which I used in a few.

Love your choice of location and time for the shoot – because the light is beautiful. Were you giving directions when posing him? All images with exception of #3 seem contemplating, even sad. But #3 just catches me off guard as I scroll through. The direct eye contact, even a little grin seems fun and breaks up the flow.

Thanks Nora! I was giving directions as we were going. The light was so great that I wanted him perfectly placed within. He is also really creative and was giving ideas as we went along as well. It was a fun shoot and collaboration.

      Hey Sharon,

I am loving these portraits! Wonderful use of light and dark, his look is intense but telling, totally into these. I like the space you have chosen, along with the simplicity of his wardrobe. The color palate matches in a nice way to bring all these elements together and make a cohesive set of images, great job!

    Late again!

I’m late again! I worked all day Saturday and shot all day Sunday, but I haven’t gotten to any editing because life is insane right now with my job overlap. Here is an iPhone shot from my shoot on Sunday. I really can’t wait to edit these images, but I didn’t want to rush an edit just to post it. So alas, I leave you with the iPhone version for now.
